The open-ended finale will not satisfy genre fans expecting a more conventional orgy of flesh-chomping carnage. But taken on its own terms, Hellgard's second feature is a smart and stylish treat.
A girls' own adventure tale for the darkly inclined, Endzeit - Ever After had its world premiere at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival and is the German feminist zombie film we didn't even know we needed until it came along.
While not a bad film, with such striking visuals, and with true originality in how the film approaches its genre, it is deeply disappointing that Endzeit was not just slightly better.
Endzeit - Ever After's philosophical underpinnings go much deeper than the expected "humanity is the real monster" banality that these films too often mistake for a unique or profound thought.
Stunning set design tells poignant stories as the women visit homes where none of the living remain.
As though anxious to bore its viewers, the film's calmer moments are repeatedly interrupted by unimpressive and random zombie attacks.
A fresh, beautifully filmed take on the zombie genre from director Hellsgård, adapted from the comic by Olivia Vieweg (who also wrote the script), with women in every key role, both in front of and behind the camera.
The zombie apocalypse is the framework of a fairy tale, except here the ever after isn't necessarily a happy one, but rather the end of one species and the birth of another.
Ever After strikes an existential tone that underplays the horror a little too much... But in its quieter moments, when Vivi and Eva are alone in their eerily depopulated world, it captures something essential and disturbing.
Gradually, Hellsgård starts adopting a more metaphysical and feminist tone, and while it all could have gone horribly wrong and turned silly by the film's conclusion, the approach works thanks to the filmmaker's well rounded approach.
It's this ecological theme that leads to some truly inspired visuals which sustain the film until its unexpected, conciliatory conclusion. Endzeit is an unbalanced film, to be sure, but proof nonetheless of zombies' enduring relevance in horror cinema.
