There's wondrous imagery, as there always is... But the filmmaker's navel-gazing tendencies slowly take over, making it clear that this is a movie by Reygadas, for Reygadas, and exists to please an audience of one.
A maddeningly over-indulgent bid at self-analysis on screen that even the director's shrink might find banal.
Maddeningly distancing at almost every turn, lacking the spiritual and existential breadth of even Reygadas' most impenetrable work.
A reflexion about love, its possibilities, its reach, its demons and the risk from demanding so much from a feeling that is so fragile. [Full Review in Spanish]
Like all other Reygadas films, Our Time is beautiful, and his newfound focus on life's pleasures rather than strictly its agonies makes for a unique texture.
"I think that the excessive duration of the film, which is around three hours, dilutes a good part of his discourse".
Our Time is gorgeously shot, naturally, and the intentions are well-meaning but far too self-serving. Gone is the hypnotism of Reygadas' best work; the soulful spirituality and existentialism...
Our Time is the story of a man who thought he could dominate everything and who ended up discovering that he was just that: a man. [Full review in Spanish]
Ambitious, recalls human atavism, which is only nuanced with the contributions of modern technology. [Full Review in Spanish]
The exposed intimacy in which the director inserts himself... is full of his cinematic calling cards: long sequences without scripted dialogue, the wild as a symbol of the human and a slow pace that delights in the environment. [Full review in Spanish]
[Our Time] has a propensity to place the camera in unusual places... that at least gives us a rest from the family psychodrama. [Full review in Spanish]
Carlos Reygadas directs a film about insecurity and love that is as visionary as it is problematic. [Full Review in Spanish]
